‘TUC Affiliates Need Empowerment’

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has been urged to empower and strengthen unions affiliated to the Congress in order to overcome challenges confronting workers in the country.

According to the General Secretary of the International Trade Union Congress (ITUC), Ms Sharan Burrow, this would enable TUC to become a stronger union movement that could dialogue for better conditions of services for workers.

“This would only not strengthen the TUC as a union movement, but could also ensure the sustainability of jobs, secure income and the protection of social rights of workers,” she said

Ms Burrow said this yesterday when she interacted with the steering committee and domestic workers of the TUC, at its headquarters in Accra.

The meeting formed part of her two day working visit, aimed at identifying challenges confronting the TUC, and to notify members of the upcoming annual congress, about the problems

Burrow said that TUC which comprised workers of both formal and informal sector should not hesitate to dialogue for better minimum wages to improve the livelihood of workers and their families..

She said noted that to ensure that members become charismatic, the ITUC has established an International Trade Congress Global Academy, to train union members to become vibrant union leaders.

Touching on the upcoming congress, Mr Burrow, gave the hint that thousands of members affiliated to the ITUC were expected to turn up.

She said the congress would focus on strengthening and empowering leadership of the union to become vibrant in the country.

Mr. Kofi Asamoah, the General Secretary of TUC expressed gratitude to Ms Burrow for her visit and for her good work.
