Truck falls over at Ofankor

There was heavy vehicular traffic along a section of  the Achimota-Ofankor road when a DAF articulated truck fell from the Accra-Kumasi highway onto a section of the road at Taifa Junction in Accra.

The accident was said to have occurred at about 2 p.m yesterday when the truck, conveying a heavy 40-footer container, burst one of its front tyres.

The driver, Baba Yaya, 46, reportedly lost control over the truck, which dragged off the road before it grazed the rails separating the main Accra-Kumasi highway and the Achimota-Ofankor road.

Fortunately, at the time the truck fell onto the Achimota-Ofankor road, there were no vehicles on that section of the road.

Eyewitnesses who heard the loud noise accompanying the tumbling of the truck and rushed to the scene described the accident as ‘miracle’ as no life was claimed.

It was only the driver and his mate who were in the truck and managed to escape suffering minor injuries.

The truck, with registration number GR 9688 E, carrying the 40-foot container loaded with prefoam, was travelling from Tema Port to Medie in Accra. Traffic

When the Daily Graphic visited the scene at about 7p.m, MTTU personnel from the Mile 7 Police Station were there to control the heavy traffic from the Neoplan Junction to Ofankor.

There were also a crane and a towing vehicle at the scene to take off the container from the truck and tow it away.

The 40-footer container and truck occupied a large portion of where it fell such that smaller vehicles were able to manoeuvre their way through but bigger ones, especially ‘trotros’ and Metro Mass Transit buses, were seen climbing the pavement to make their way.

The police had a tough time controlling traffic as the owners of the containers and their shipping agents declined to have the container opened for the contents to be unloaded and the truck towed away.

However, the owners of the container, who refused to speak to the police and the press, kept mute about the contents of the container, directing the police to speak to their shipping agent.
