The President of Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS) Mr James E.K. Dadson, has advised the citizenry to desist from encroaching on government’s lands since economic cost of dealing with encroachments are high. He said there is a need to prosecute those who in flagrant disregard the law, engage in such unacceptable practices.

The President said these at a press conference held in Accra to announce the GhIS’s 9th Surveyors Week and 45th Annual General Meeting. According to Mr. Dadson,, in acquiring land, the prospective developer must obtain the necessary permits before carrying out any development. “These permits are obtained from the various District Assemblies who have administrative jurisdiction over the area”.

He noted that “failure to establish the ownership status of the vendor before proceeding to acquire the land, the requisite development/building or building permit may lead to dire consequences.”

The rightful owner or the state agencies responsible for enforcing the law may cause the demolition of the property if it is unavoidable” he added. He cited the recent demolition exercise which took place at Adjei Kojo, near Tema by TDC as a typical example.

He said, to avoid a similar event happening, all state agencies must take proactive measures to prevent illegal development of their lands. It is necessary for the prospective land owners to use the services of professionals.

He added that in order to achieve governance in the country, both government in power and civil societies must play their role respectively. “The GhIS being the only body that regulates the profession of surveying and its practice in Ghana has strategically positioned itself to partner Government and other stakeholders to ensure a sustainable development for economic growth and well-being of the citizenry. “This is what has informed us in adopting the theme for this year’s celebration; “Good Governance for Effective Development,” he noted.
