The deplorable state of a school building in Adadientem, a village near Kibi in the Eastern Region, has caused chiefs in the area to seek help from small scale miners.
The Adadientem Roman Catholic School building, which is on the verge of collapse, poses great danger to the lives of over 100 pupils and their teachers.
The situation, according to residents is due to the failure of the East Akyem Municipal Assembly to complete a new 6-unit classroom block.
Head teacher of the school, Simon Glago, who expressed worry at the deplorable state of the school block told Joy News although several petitions have been sent to the relevant authorities, they are yet to take the necessary actions.
He lamented that the once prominent school, which has churned out notable Ghanaian statesmen like Dr.J.B Danquah of blessed memory, has now become a death trap.
There are deep cracks all over the walls of the school building.
”We have already reported the case to the municipal assembly at Kyebi and on many occasions we had to embarked on demonstrations…but nobody…not even the MCE has come here to take a look at what we are complaining about”, the head teacher fumed.
A few months ago parts of one of the classrooms collapsed following a heavy downpour.
The Municipal Chief Executive of the area, Simon Asirifi, declined to answer questions about the reason for delays in the completion of the new classroom block.
The chiefs in the area have therefore called on a small scale miners to complete the new building which was started in the year 2005.
The Ankobiahene of the area, Nana Baffour Kyei Acheampong, said due to the poor state of the old classroom block, teaching and learning will come to a halt when the rains set in.
He said he was happy the small scale miners have come to the community’s assistance.
”There are times I have to tell the headmaster to let the children to go home when the rains set in because the block has become very weak and may collapse on them”, he said.
”And we don’t want to lose any lives so we have decided that [the] small scale miners here will roof the new block for us to relocate”, the chief explained.
