Death toll in UDS hostel fire now two

Another student of the University for Development Studies (UDS) who was among the three  injured as a result of a gas explosion on February, 11, 2014 has passed away.

The Director of the Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre of Korle-Bu, Dr Opoku Ware Ampomah, who confirmed the news to the Daily Graphic yesterday, said the student died last Friday evening.

The death of Bridgette Pamphil Boateng came a day after Grace Ankrah had passed away at the Korle-Bu Hospital, where they were receiving treatment.  Background

Three students of the Wa Campus of the UDS — Grace Ankrah (25), Beatrice Bampoe (24) and Bridgette Pamphil Boateng (24) — suffered various degrees of injury when fire swept through their rooms at dawn on February 11, 2014.

The incident occurred when they tried to light their gas stove to prepare food that day.

The victims were flown to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 for further treatment because of the degree of the burns they suffered.

The fire also caused extensive damage to the victims’ personal belongings and destroyed three of the rented 12-apartment student hostel.  Ms Bampoe

Dr Ampomah said the condition of the only survivor, Ms Bampoe, was stable.
