AMA To Name Streets

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) will in the next 18 months name streets and houses to ensure full implementation of the street naming policy.

The National Urban Policy Framework and Action Plan mandate the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development to implement the street naming programme within 18 months.

In April 2013, President Mahama under the policy gave direction to that effect.

The Mayor of Accra, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, who disclosed this at a public forum to validate streets that have been assigned names in the metropolis said in line with the directive, the AMA had scaled up the implementation of its own initiative of naming properties and streets within its jurisdiction through the Urban Management Land Information System (UMLIS).

The World Bank through the second phase of the Land Administration Project (LAPII) is assisting the AMA to name street and number houses within it catchment area.

The forum was to validate 3,584 streets that had been assigned names and also serve as a platform to create awareness and enrich the outlook of all stakeholders and the general public on the street naming and property addressing system being implemented by the AMA.

After that, a citywide public forum and the incorporation of feedback on the names would be approved by the Accra Planning Committee and gazetted.

The AMA would further procure satellite images; street signs and house number plates and assign numbers to every property in the metropolis

According to the Mayor, the AMA had among other things held 22 community consultations, mounted pilot sign ages in five communities and 3,584 streets names assigned with community participation in its efforts to implement the policy.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Julius Debrah who chaired the function said governance was about getting people involved and urged residents to get involved in approving the names of streets in their localities.
