Medeama down Panthers in Confed Cup


Medeama SC have made a winning start to their Confederations Cup journey by beating Panthers of Equatorial Guinea by 2 goals to one in their own backyard on Sunday.

The FA Cup champions, who are making their debut in continental club football scored through new signing Michael Helegbe and Samuel Nzemaba in Malabo.

The hosts began the game on a high, piling up pressure upon pressure on the Mauve and Yellow. The however failed to capitalise on the chances that came their way.

After soaking the pressure for a good part of the first half, Medeama displayed a beautiful brand of football, with a great transition from defense to attack.

They began the second half in similar fashion and broke the deadlock deservedly with Helegbe finishing off a good move in the 59th minute.

20 minutes later anthers got the equaliser through a deflected effort that beat the goalie.

The match appeared to be set for a draw until Nzemaba netted from close range to secure the victory in added time.

This win will serve as a needed boost for the Ghanaian club, who are making thier first ever appearance in a continental competition.

The return leg of the knockout competition will be at the Essipong Stadium in Sekondi on the weekend of February 14-16, 2014.
