The Minister of Youth and Sports Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah has praised indigenous bank First Capital Plus for stumping out US$ 10m to sponsor the country’s elite division.
The then Ghana Premier League had been without a headline sponsor after Telephony Company Glo Mobile had their contract terminated after defaulting payment several times.
First Capital Plus, a former savings and loans company, will pay US$ 2m a year for five years.
This is a huge financial boost for the clubs who complained bitterly about the lack of cash to finance their trips in the elite.
“The decision by First Capital Plus Bank to sponsor the league is a bold one and couldn’t have come at crucial point,” Afriyie-Ankrah said.
“We thank them for coming to our aid and we will ensure we abide by the rules of the contract.”
The second round of the First Capital Plus Premier League resumes on Wednesday.
