The tricycles popularly known as “MOTOR KING” originally designed to carry light goods are now being used to convey passengers as a means of transport in the Northern Region.
The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) has attributed road traffic crashes in Region to the introduction and operation of tricycles in the Tamale Metropolis.
Death tolls from road crushes in the region had increased from 105 between January and December 2012 to 166 within the same period in 2013.
According to the NRSC, injuries rose from 225 in 2012 to 666 in 2013 and called on stakeholders, especially opinion leaders.
Market women who usually patronize this means are always at risk if any accident occurs.
Though effort of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service in the region for clamping down the manners, more education and support is needed from the public in order to save lives for the country.
Speaking to a motoking seller, Alhaji Abass Mumuni admitted the unfortunate practice, but he contributes to the lack of education given to the users.
It is realized that, the tricycle obstructs the free movement of vehicles, resulting in rampant accidents, claiming lives.
