President Barack Obama on Friday will formally announce that he has picked Deputy National Security Adviser Denis McDonough as White House chief of staff, part of a sweeping shake-up at the dawn of the president’s second term, an aide said.<\/p>\n
Obama is expected to detail the personnel changes at 12:10 p.m. in the East Room of the White House, the aide said on condition he not be named. The choice of McDonough to succeed Jack Lew, who has been nominated to be treasury secretary, confirms a pattern of the president picking trusted, longtime advisers\u2014and not outsiders\u2014for key posts, reports The Ticket.<\/p>\n
McDonough, 43, has been with Obama since the then-senator first came to Washington a decade ago. The aide emphasized that McDonough has \u201cplayed a key role in all of the major national security decisions\u201d in Obama\u2019s first term, including the withdrawal from Iraq, the ongoing pullout from Afghanistan, and the repeal of \u201cDon\u2019t Ask, Don\u2019t Tell.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a veteran of Capitol Hill, Denis understands the importance of reaching across the aisle to make progress for the American people\u2014whether it\u2019s on jobs and economy, health care or education, reducing the deficit or addressing climate change,\u201d the aide said.<\/p>\n
Among the other changes: Combative Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer will succeed David Plouffe as senior adviser, while respected longtime Democratic communications pro Jennifer Palmieri will replace him. Obama has repeatedly listed poor public relations as one of the greatest failings of his first term.<\/p>\n
The head of the Department of Justice\u2019s national security division, Lisa Monaco, will move into the White House to replace John Brennan as Obama\u2019s top homeland security and counterterrorism aide (pending Brennan\u2019s confirmation to head the CIA).<\/p>\n
Some additional changes:<\/p>\n
– Rob Nabors will become assistant to the president and deputy White House chief of staff for policy.<\/p>\n
– Tony Blinken will take over McDonough’s job as deputy national security adviser.<\/p>\n
– Danielle Gray will become assistant to the president and Cabinet secretary.<\/p>\n
– Katy Kale will become assistant to the president for management and administration.<\/p>\n
– Miguel Rodriguez will be assistant to the president and director of legislative affairs.<\/p>\n
