{"id":62886,"date":"2013-04-11T08:16:16","date_gmt":"2013-04-11T08:16:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2013\/04\/alamieyeseighas-pardon-us-remains-adamant\/"},"modified":"2013-04-11T08:16:16","modified_gmt":"2013-04-11T08:16:16","slug":"alamieyeseighas-pardon-us-remains-adamant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2013\/04\/11\/alamieyeseighas-pardon-us-remains-adamant\/","title":{"rendered":"Alamieyeseigha\u2019s pardon: US remains adamant"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"71.187096774194\">\n<p>By VICTORIA OJEME<\/p>\n<p>ABUJA\u2014The United States government has said that it has not changed its objection to the presidential pardon granted former Bayelsa governor, Deprieye Alamieyesegha.<\/p>\n<p>The US government had recently condemned the pardon granted the former governor, insisting that the gesture was a set back on the war against corruption.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Abuja, yesterday, during a teleconference on US-Nigeria Binational Commission, Political Counsellor, Embassy of the United States of America, Gregory Lawless, said \u201cthe situation has not changed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, stressed that the objection to the pardon and Federal Government rebuke not withstanding, the relationship between the two countries remains strong.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cWe have a very mature relationship. So we can recognize our differences and opinions on issues. We are moving on as we have a lot of things to do\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On the achievement of the bi-national commission, Lawless said the commission had successfully integrated civil society into the electoral process prior to the 2011 elections.<\/p>\n<p>He also noted that the commission, among other things, had been able to sustain and elevated dialogue with energy sector officials on energy policy reforms to increase investment.<\/p>\n<p>US and Nigeria, Lawless further said had also agreed to explore a partnership with the Nigerian Army to build its civil affairs capacity to enhance trust between Nigeria\u2019s citizens and the military.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that the energy and investment working group has focused primarily on reform of Nigeria\u2019s power and hydrocarbon sectors.<\/p>\n<p>He added tha: \u201cThe United States is providing policy support to strengthen Nigeria\u2019s domestic agricultural policies.\u00a0 The United States supports efforts to expand agricultural lending and otherwise improve private agriculture sector growth\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Comments are moderated.
