{"id":61495,"date":"2013-04-09T11:30:34","date_gmt":"2013-04-09T11:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2013\/04\/uhuru-kenyatta-takes-oath-as-kenyan-president\/"},"modified":"2013-04-09T11:30:34","modified_gmt":"2013-04-09T11:30:34","slug":"uhuru-kenyatta-takes-oath-as-kenyan-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2013\/04\/09\/uhuru-kenyatta-takes-oath-as-kenyan-president\/","title":{"rendered":"Uhuru Kenyatta takes oath as Kenyan president"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"78.781204111601\">\n<p>NAIROBI\u00a0\u00a0(AFP) \u2013 Uhuru Kenyatta was sworn as Kenya\u2019s fourth president on Tuesday to cheers from tens of thousands of supporters, despite facing an international crimes against humanity trial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Republic of Kenya,\u201d Kenyatta said, clutching a bible as he took the oath of office.<\/p>\n<p>Kenyatta, wearing a dark suit and red tie, also pledged to \u201cprotect and uphold, the sovereignty, integrity and dignity of the people of Kenya\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Officials had to appeal for quiet as 60,000 people packed into Kenya\u2019s national football stadium chanted Kenyatta\u2019s name and roared in support as they danced.<\/p>\n<p>William Ruto, who like Kenyatta faces trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity in The Hague, took the oath of office as vice-president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will always truly and diligently serve the people and the Republic of Kenya in the office of the deputy president,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will do justice to all without fear, favour, affection and ill will,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Security was heavy as Kenyatta loyalists, dressed in the red colours of the winning Jubilee Coalition party, waved as military bands played tunes to welcome the new leader and say farewell to outgoing President Mwai Kibaki, 81, retiring after more than a decade in power.<\/p>\n<p>Before handing over power Kibaki circled the stadium waving to crowds from an open topped vehicle and accompanied by a guard of honour.<\/p>\n<p>Heads of state of Kenya\u2019s neighbours watching the ceremony included Ethiopia\u2019s Hailemariam Desalegn, Somalia\u2019s Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, South Sudan\u2019s Salva Kiir, Tanzania\u2019s Jakaya Kikwete and Uganda\u2019s Yoweri Museveni.<\/p>\n<p>Western nations, many of whom have a policy of only \u201cessential contact\u201d with ICC indictees, have said they sent ambassadors to the ceremony.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Comments are moderated.
