{"id":25621,"date":"2013-02-11T22:31:23","date_gmt":"2013-02-11T22:31:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2013\/02\/nigeria-police-blames-boko-haram-for-attack-on-kano-emir\/"},"modified":"2013-02-11T22:31:23","modified_gmt":"2013-02-11T22:31:23","slug":"nigeria-police-blames-boko-haram-for-attack-on-kano-emir","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2013\/02\/11\/nigeria-police-blames-boko-haram-for-attack-on-kano-emir\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria police blames Boko Haram for attack on Kano Emir"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span id=\"date\">Published on February 11, 2013 by pmnews \u00a0\u00a0\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0 No Comments<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Police in Nigeria\u2019s Kano state said Monday that militants from Boko Haram were behind last month\u2019s attack on the Emir Alhaji Ado Bayero, adding that seven people had been arrested over the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Eight others are wanted in connection with the January 19 attack by a suicide bomber and several gun-wielding accomplices who targeted the convoy of the Emir, killing five but only injuring the emir.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_154176\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter c8\" readability=\"7\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.ghanamma.com\/uploads\/2013\/02\/abd8Emir-Bayeros-motorcade-they-were-paraded-by-1.jpg\" alt=\"the-suspected-terrorists-who-attacked-Emir-Bayeros-motorcade-\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" class=\"size-full wp-image-154176\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">the-suspected-terrorists-who-attacked-Emir-Bayeros-motorcade-<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Islamists have repeatedly targeted traditional Islamic leaders, whom they accuse of betraying the faith by cooperating with the country\u2019s secular government.<\/p>\n<p>Kano\u2019s Police Commissioner Ibrahim Idris told reporters that one of the suspects, 35-year-old Adamu Sani, was arrested shortly after the attack and had confessed to being a member of Boko Haram.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe voluntarily confessed to (having) participated in the attack on the Emir\u2019s convoy and so many other coordinated attacks in the state,\u201d Idris said, reading from a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn one of the confessions\u2026 he stated that he was recruited into the terror group,\u201d the police chief added, later specifying that the group referred to was Boko Haram.<\/p>\n<p>Boko Haram has said it is fighting to create an Islamic state in mostly Muslim northern Nigeria. The southern half of the country is mostly Christian.<\/p>\n<p>According to Idris, Sani confessed to attending a mosque in Kano, northern Nigeria, where the imam regularly advocates violence.<\/p>\n<p>Sani\u2019s statements had led police to detain six more suspects and issue arrest warrants for eight others, he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir profiles have been forwarded to Interpol\u201d should they try to leave Nigeria, Idris added.<\/p>\n<p>The attack on the emir\u2019s convoy, which killed his driver, two aides and two others, came on the eve of the first anniversary of the deadliest attack ever by Boko Haram, also in Kano, in which at least 185 people were killed.<\/p>\n<p>Violence linked to Boko Haram\u2019s insurgency has left some 3,000 people dead since 2009, including people killed during operations by security forces.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"WP-PrintIcon c7\" src=\"http:\/\/pmnewsnigeria.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-print\/images\/printer_famfamfam.gif\" alt=\"print\" title=\"print\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"entryMeta\" readability=\"11.281938325991\">Posted by pmnews on February 11, 2013, 10:43 pm.
