{"id":18896,"date":"2013-02-04T17:12:00","date_gmt":"2013-02-04T17:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2013\/02\/afcon-adebayor-attacks-coach-says-he-was-not-a-help\/"},"modified":"2013-02-04T17:12:00","modified_gmt":"2013-02-04T17:12:00","slug":"afcon-adebayor-attacks-coach-says-he-was-not-a-help","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2013\/02\/04\/afcon-adebayor-attacks-coach-says-he-was-not-a-help\/","title":{"rendered":"Afcon: Adebayor attacks coach, says he was not a help"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"121\">\n<p>NELSPRUIT, South Africa (AFP) \u2013 The fragile peace between Togo coach Didier Six and his star player Emmanuel Adebayor has been shattered following the team\u2019s quarter-final loss to Burkina Faso.<\/p>\n<p>In the aftermath of Sunday\u2019s 1-0 extra-time defeat, Adebayor rounded on the inexperienced Six in a no-holds-barred attack on the Frenchman\u2019s style of management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe coach was not a help! Me, I was on the pitch, so I couldn\u2019t do both jobs (coaching and playing).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried to do my best, but it\u2019s true he didn\u2019t help us,\u201d the Tottenham striker told French radio station RFI.<\/p>\n<p>Adebayor\u2019s sentiments were endorsed by Togo goalkeeper Kossi Agassa, who in a not-so-veiled criticism of Six\u2019s tactical nous said: \u201cIt\u2019s not up to the players on the pitch to make changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Six, when contacted by AFP, said that he wanted to have \u201ca cool head before making an assessment\u201d of Togo\u2019s Nations Cup campaign and the reaction from Adebayor and Agassa.<\/p>\n<p>But he went on to point out that: \u201cI took them (the team) to a place where they had never been before,\u201d referring to Togo\u2019s first appearance in a Nations Cup quarter-final.<\/p>\n<p>Togo\u2019s build-up to the 2013 Nations Cup was dominated by a \u2018will-he-won\u2019t-he\u2019 saga involving Adebayor\u2019s participation following a series of run-ins with the Togolese Football Federation over matters of security, management and bonuses.<\/p>\n<p>Adebayor told RFI: \u201cIf the Togo team is organised in the best way possible, I will alweys be there for it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s true that I hear each time \u2018he\u2019s coming, he\u2019s not coming\u2019 \u2014 but that\u2019s because there are lots of problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf these problems are resolved, I will be there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve seen that I give the best of myself. I speak in the dressing room, I\u2019m a leader, I\u2019m the captain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adebayor, who scored once in Togo\u2019s run to a first quarter-final appearance, added: \u201cI\u2019m disappointed, disgusted, beaten!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe came here with the idea of winning the Nations Cup, to go to the final and, unfortunately, we were knocked out by Burkina. The disappointment is more than enormous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite his attack on Six, he insisted that now was not the time to look for scapegoats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most important thing is to return home quietly and tomorrow we\u2019ll see what everyone has to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On his international future, Adebayor said: \u201cMy international career is not stopping here. I\u2019ve been in a Nations Cup quarter-final, now I think I\u2019ve got the qualities to go to the semi-finals, and a final, and to win the title.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you know as well as I do that our management isn\u2019t really up to that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith our performance at this Nations Cup, the country, the president of the republic, the fans have seen what we are capable of. Now it\u2019s up to them to invest so that we can organise in the best manner possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Togo\u2019s Cup campaign came to an end when Jonathan Pitroipa broke the deadlock on 105 minutes to book the Burkinabe a semi-final meeting with Ghana in Nelspruit on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Comments are moderated.
