Sammy Awuku
Troubled deputy Communications Director for the opposition New Patriotic Party, Sammy Awuku is suggesting equal measure of punishment from the Supreme Court for a member of the governing National Democratic Congress’ communication team, Stephen Atubiga.
Mr. Awuku made call on News Night on Joy FM, shortly after the judges hearing the election petition at the Supreme Court, banned him from further attending hearing of the case.
The judges gave the ruling after concession by Awuku that his comments on Peace FM criticising the final touchline warning were offensive.
Sammy Awuku ‘produced’ himself before the court retracting and apologising for the comments. The court had indicated it would deal with his case at a later time after he was found to be absent in court.
The NPP activist criticised the judges for citing a Daily Guide report as improper reportage. He said the court was being selective in its warning.
“What struck me is that, the warning [by the Supreme Court] was given on 24th [June] then the NDC member on the panel on Asempa FM on Tuesday [June 25], should also apologise,” Mr. Awuku said.
Stephen Atubiga said on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme on Tuesday that: “We are prepared to meet the NPP boot for boot. We are ever ready; we will not hand over”.
He said even if the NPP wins the court case; it will be “a bitter-sweet victory” because “Ghana cannot contain all of us”.
Mr. Atubiga’s statement has been condemned by the National Peace Council.
According to Chairman for the Council, Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante, the comments by the NDC activist contradicts the position President John Mahama who has declared his readiness to accept the verdict of the Supreme Court on the case.
