Some 45 students of the University of Ghana will on Friday, 15th March 2013 undergo a 1-day training on gender violence, women’s leadership and empowerment. The training is part of events to mark International Women’s Day which fell on March 8 and will take place at the University of African Studies YIRI Lodge near the Noguchi Memorial Centre, University of Ghana.

The event, to be attended by students in first, second and third year is organized by the United Nations Information Centre, Accra (UNIC Accra) in collaboration with the Centre for Gender Studies and Advocacy (CEGENSA) at the University of Ghana, and the Women’s Law and Human Rights Institute of the Ark Foundation.

It is funded by UN Women and supported by Emperor Gaza International Foundation, an NGO on disability and CIMG Marketing Women Network, a group of CIMG Marketing Women awardees.

At the end of the training, participants would have gained knowledge and skills in women’s leadership and empowerment, in particular, for addressing the issue of the nature, dynamics and impacts of Domestic Violence on women and children.

The students are expected to develop projects to be carried out within six months, findings of which will be presented at an event to mark International Day of the Girl Child in October this year.

The objective of this training session is to advance students’ knowledge on women rights and their understanding of the commemoration of International Women’s Day and provide the platform for the youth to explore their areas of interest on women and gender issues, provide the opportunity for them to go out to conduct a research in their area of interest and create the avenue for their voices to be heard.

The training session will be facilitated by a team of gender experts from CEGENSA and the Ark Foundation. Presentations will be made by Ms Afua Ansre of UN Women and Dr. Joyce Aryee, Executive Director, Salt & Light Ministries.
