The Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Ms Mavis Ama Frimpong, has urged constituency chairmen of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to put their acts together to reduce internal wranglings in the party.
She said she had confidence in the chairmen to resolve any wranglings within the party. That, she said, would help strengthen the structures of the party at the grassroots level.
She said this at the first national general meeting of constituency chairmen of the NDC which took place in Accra last Saturday.
The meeting adopted measures to ensure that the peace in the country is sustained after the Supreme Court verdict. The meeting also aimed at promoting the welfare and sustenance of political activists at the grassroots level for accelerated peace and development.
Ms Frimpong, therefore, appealed to the chairmen to respect the party structures, saying they should not transform themselves into a revolt group or tin-gods who when ‘’they cough nobody could talk’’.
Conspicuously missing at the meeting were constituency chairmen from the Greater Accra Region, national and regional chairmen of the party as well as senior ministers and members of Parliament of the NDC.
She called on the chairmen to work and sacrifice for the ordinary Ghanaian so that more people could join the party to make it grow from strength to strength.
Ms Frimpong urged them to unite solidly behind President John Mahama and approve whoever he nominated to become a district chief executive and not allow personal interest to override the objective of the party which has to serve every Ghanaian irrespective of party affiliations,
She said the forum had come at the appropriate time to help strengthen structures of the party as well as to deepen democracy at the grassroots level
She, therefore, urged the chairmen to remain focused and allow peace and unity within the party to be their guiding principles since any family that was divided could not come together for peace.
She said the party had suffered humiliation before when in opposition and that the chairmen and constituency executive ought not to lose sight of what they had today.
Ms Frimpong, therefore, urged party activists to work hard to protect the image of the party instead of painting a gloomy picture of the party .
The District Chief Executive for Akatsi North, Mr James Gunu, in his address said the constituency chairmen were king makers as such were equally as powerful as the chief.
However , he said, as king makers, they could not become kings since if by trying to become one and it was not managed well, it could lead to confusion and anarchy within the party.
The member of Parliament for Afram Plains North, Mr Aboagye Didieye, who was honoured by the chairmen for dedicated service to the welfare of the chairmen, suggested that the chairmen organised peace marches in their constituencies to drum home the need for peace after the verdict.
He urged the chairmen to involve all the other political parties in the peace march which ought to be free from politics of insults.
A 13-member interim executive was introduced at the meeting with Mr Stephen Edward Moore, chairman of Mfantsiman constituency, as the national interim co-ordinator.
Some of the executive included Mr Festus Addai as deputy co-ordinator for the Central Zone and Mr Michael Lazagla as the deputy co-ordinator for the Southern zone and Alhaji Andani for the Northern zone.
