At a time when the Nation is patiently awaiting the final verdict of the Supreme Court in the Presidential Election Petition, some actions and comments that seek to pre-empt the final verdict of the Supreme Court must be a cause for concern by all stakeholders in the Country.
There have been very disturbing revelations particularly in the Northern and Western Regions where T-Shirts purported to herald the victory of the NDC are in circulation. Some of these T-shirts are bearing inscriptions such as “You and I were not there”, “Declare me President at all cost”, “Dr. Pink Sheets” etc. ostensibly, with the intention to make mockery of the Petitioners.
This revelation was made by Mr. Alphonsus Arthur, the Western Regional Director of NCCE at a press conference in Sekondi on Friday.
In a similar fashion, the current president, who is a party to this landmark case claimed upon his visit to the Chief Imam during the last Eid Mubarak celebrations that “truth is on my side” and that the Supreme Court would confirm him as President.
Anita De Soso, the NDC Women’s Organizer in defiance of the Catholic Bishop Conference’s clarion call for peace, declared their intention to celebrate after the Supreme Court’s verdict and that “no one can stop (them) from jubilating”.
The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party is amazed that these NDC Party big wigs have failed to heed the calls for calm, circumspection and decorum. We share in the sentiments expressed by Mr. Alphonsus Arthur that, these actions and statements are “insinuative and inflammatory and have the potential to inflame passion and cause mayhem”.
These actions and comments raise nagging questions which the Youth Wing demands answers 1. Does the NDC know the final verdict? 2. What motivates the NDC to prepare for these celebrations? 3. What does the NDC know which other parties in the case do not know? 4. Is the NDC committed to Justice and the Rule of Law?
The National Youth Wing of NPP wishes to reinforce its commitment to Justice, Rule of Law and National Unity before and after the Supreme Court ruling. We also wish to admonish the Police to be professional in handling any person or groups of persons whose actions have the tendency to disturb the peace.
The T-shirts in circulation can trigger tension in the system and should be condemned in no uncertain terms. We urge all our members to be calm and not be provoked by any person or group.
