The New Patriotic Party (NPP) will on Thursday commemorates its 21st anniversary with a flag raising ceremony and a public lecture. The party was formed in 1992 and contested in Ghana’s first democratic elections in the same year.
Speaking on Citi FM yesterday, the National Chairman of the party, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey stated that the NPP will celebrate their contribution to Ghana’s multi-party democracy.
Mr. Lamptey recalled that Ghana started “the first election in 1992 and we had very little time for preparation. First of all, we emerged out of so many years of military rule as the most coherent political force and we were able to quickly put a party together.”
According to him, despite experiencing the ‘stealing that went on in that election (1992 election),” the party under no circumstances subjected Ghana to any form of violence.”
He said “instead, we wrote a book called the stolen verdict that showed all the different ways in which the election of 1992 had been stolen.”
He noted that the NPP has played a major role in deepening the multi-party democracy in Ghana by fighting for transparency in Ghana’s elections including the fight “for transparent ballot boxes, we fought for photo IDs, and all these things are things that deepen our democracy.
“Currently as you know, we have been engaged in a momentous travel by putting together the first election petition,” he added.
