Ghana midfielder Michael Essien was axed from the Chelsea 18-man squad that escaped with a slim win over Aston Villa in the English Premiership on Wednesday night.
The 30-year-old was overlooked by manager Jose Mourinho as he watched the entire regulation minutes from the stands at the Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea needed a Branislav Ivanovic header to beat a resilient Aston Villa side 2-1 at the Stamford Bridge to record their second straight win of the season and take temporary leadership of the Premiership.
Essien was an unused substitute in Chelsea’s opening day victory over Hull City over the weekend.
