Gomoa Ajumako Omanhen appeals to government

The Omanhen of the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Area, Obrempon Nyanful Krampah XI, has appealed to the government to return their lands which were subjects of dispute between them and the Effutus.

Following a protracted land dispute between the chiefs and people of the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Area and the Effutus, the government took over the disputed lands and vested them in the state to avert violent clashes among the two feuding people.

Obrempon Nyanful Krampah XI made the appeal during a courtesy call on him at Gomoa Ajumako by the Central Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Sarpong.

Obrempon Nyanful Krampah said even though the court ruled in favour of the people of the Ajumako Traditional Area, the government still held custody of the lands.

He said the situation had given the Lands Commission the exclusive right to administer the land and had been selling them without paying any compensation to the people of the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Area.

He described the situation as unacceptable and urged the government to restore the lands to their rightful owners and pay them the appropriate money, with interest that had accrued from the sale of the lands by the Lands Commission over the years.

He expressed regret that persistent pleadings by the chiefs and the people to the government to revert the lands to their owners had failed and, therefore, made an urgent appeal to the government, through the minister, to redress the situation to enable the people to realise the maximum benefits from their bona fide property.

He also appealed for the rehabilitation of the road network in the area and an increase in the allowance paid to gazetted chiefs to enable them to discharge their traditional duties.

During a call on the Omanhen of the Gomoa Akyempem Traditional Area, Obrifo Ahunaku Ahor Ankobea II, at Gomoa Assin in the Gomoa West District earlier, the Omanhen entreated Mr Sarpong to prevail upon the contractors working on the roads within the area, which are in deplorable state, to speed up the projects to promote economic activities in the area.

Obrifo Ahor Ankobea expressed the hope that the regional minister would give the necessary support towards the development of the district.

Reacting to the concerns of the two chiefs, Mr Sarpong, who was accompanied by his deputy, Mrs Queenstar Pokuaa Sawyer, said the roads in the area had already been awarded on contract and that the government would ensure that they were completed to ease the plight of the people.

He asked them to continue to mobilise their people to unite and support their district chief executives to offer the needed leadership to improve upon the living conditions of their people.

He reminded them of the need to avoid chieftaincy disputes and communal clashes and rather use their resources to tap the potentials of their areas for their mutual benefit.

He commended the people for their undaunted support for the government and promised that they would receive their fair share of the national cake.

Mr Sarpong used the occasion to inaugurate an GH¢80,000.00 three unit teacher’s flat for the Apam Senior High School and a Teachers Resource Centre at Apam in the Gomoa West District during two separate ceremonies and urged the chiefs and people to intensify the campaign against the high incidence of teenage pregnancy, which is seriously affecting the education of the girl-child in the region.

The accommodation for teachers was funded by the Gomoa West District Assembly from its District Development Fund while the resource centre, located in a rehabilitated building at a cost of GH¢7,000.00 was made possible from the Urban Poverty Reduction Programme, the African Development Bank, the Government of Ghana and the assembly.

He commended the assembly for the two projects and urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the projects to improve their living conditions.

The District Chief Executive for Gomoa West, Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, commended the assembly members, the chiefs and the people for their overwhelming support for him during his approval.

He said within the last four years, he led the assembly to execute about 150 projects in the district to improve upon the economic conditions in the area and expressed the hope that they would give him the same support during the years ahead for the development of the area.
