World Vision, Graphic to promote cause of the deprived


The Managing Director of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), Mr Kenneth Ashigbey, has given an assurance that the flagship newspaper of the company, the Daily Graphic, will not relent on its efforts at highlighting the development needs of the deprived in society.

He said as part of its mandate, the newspaper was meant to ensure that policy makers provide the needed attention and resources to make life bearable for the poor and rural people.

Mr Ashigbey, who is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Graphic, gave the assurance when the National Director of World Vision International, Mr Hubert D. Charles, paid a courtesy call on him.

The visit was also to explore avenues of collaboration between the Daily Graphic and World Vision to address the aspirations of rural people.

Mr Ashigbey noted that journalism should be about canvassing for progressive development, saying, ‘It must lead to a positive impact on the lives of the people and not the promotion of divisive tendencies or rabble-rousing.’

Mr Charles said his outfit was currently concentrating on providing access to quality water and sanitation facilities for rural children because research had indicated that most of the children hardly sat in the classroom because they had to go in search of water.

He noted that currently World Vision had sunk over 2,000 wells and was working to provide access to water for more children as a means of helping them to stay in the classroom and also reduce water-related diseases that had plagued many poor communities.

Mr Charles said although Ghana had a national potable water provision access of 80 per cent, the situation in some rural communities in the three northern regions was dire.
