Jose Mourinho began his second spell at Chelsea with a comfortable 2-0 victory over newly-promoted Hull City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
First half goals from Oscar and Frank Lampard sealed the three points for a Chelsea side never troubled by a battling, but blunt, Tigers side. The Blues could even afford an early penalty miss through Lampard.
That opportunity came when Fernando Torres was felled in the area by Hull goalkeeper Allan McGregor inside five minutes of the goalkeeper’s premiership debut.
The Scottish stopper made amends though as he saved Lampard’s spot-kick, diving low to make the save.
But it was not long before the home side were ahead, their early pressure eventually telling when the Brazilian Oscar swept the ball home on 13 minutes.
And it was 2-0 when Lampard made amends for his earlier penalty miss with an excellent free-kick goal from a full 35-yards out.
Chelsea were always on top and should have had another spot-kick when Branislav Ivanovic was clearly fouled in the area, but no penalty given by the referee.
It mattered not, they were able to comfortably play out the remainder of the match and get their season off to a winning start.
