The association of fishmongers at Moree in the Central Region have called on the Abura Asebu Kwamankese District Assembly to work on the construction of a fish market in the area to boost economic activities.
The fishmongers at Moree, a community noted for its vibrant fishing activities, say a fish market for the many fishmongers would serve as ready market for the fishing industry in the area, boost economic activities and reduce the burden of transporting the fish to other distant marketing centres.
The women from Moree usually smoke the fish and sell it in Assin Fosu and sometimes in markets in the Ashanti Region. But they face several dangers transporting the fish and say they want a fish market in the community.
Last Thursday, for instance, eight people from the community including five women lost their lives in a fatal accident when they were transporting their fish to Fumso near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region to sell.
Sixteen others sustained various degrees of injuries.
The secretary to the association, Mr Felix Abakah, said apart from the accidents, the women also suffered armed robbery attacks on their travels.
He said the Moree community had already given out a stretch of land at Moree to the district assembly for the construction of the market but this had not been done.
Mr Abakah said with support from the Business Sector Advocacy Challenge (BUSAC) Fund, the fishmongers made a lot of calls for the development of the market to no avail.
He prayed the district to come quickly to help.
