Ghanaian youngster Mohammed Fatau made his Spanish top-flight debut on Sunday as his club Granada got their La Liga campaign off to the best possible start with a nervy 2-1 win at Osasuna.

The 20-year-old, who earned rave reviews for his pre-season form, came on a substitute late in the game to make his first appearance in one of the best leagues in the world.

Fatau came in the 86th minute to replace Yacine Brahimi as they protected their crucial away victory.

In a match between two teams who narrowly avoided the drop last season, the visitors seized the half-time initiative with goals from Youssef El Arabi and Hassan Yebdi.

Francisco Punal then replied for Osasuna before Piti missed a penalty for Granada, but Lucas Alcaraz’s men held on for an opening win.

Fatau has been the ‘perfect’ player for the defensive midfielder position with his work rate, timely tackles and ball distribution.

In the absence of Fran Rico and Hassan Yebda, the youngster did the right things during pre-season to be considered by the technical team.

He was signed by Udinese in the summer of 2011 but loaned to the Team B of Spanish lower division side Cadiz which play in Tercera Division (Division IV).
