FG Targets 286,000 Borno Farmers

Maiduguri — The federal government has a target of about 286,000 farmers in Borno State to access subsidised fertilizers under the Growth Enhancement Scheme (GES) this year, Minister of State for Agriculture Bukar Tijjani has said.

He said this at the weekend in Maiduguri while flagging off the 2013 fertilizer sales in the state.

Tijjani, who was represented by Kale Bukar, the Federal Director of Agriculture in charge of Yobe, said only farmers who registered will benefit for the 2012/2013 season.

He said the Federal Govern-ment allocated 800 trucks of fertilizers to the state for sales to the farmers this year at a 25 percent subsidy rate of N3, 850 per bag. He added that 5000 of the 28,600 farmers are women.

“Each farmer will be entitled to a free 20kg bag of highly improved maize or rice seed after purchasing the fertilizer,” he said.
