Justice Atuguba Admits: Sir John Is A Good Lawyer But…

Due to his heart-to-heart and flamboyant ways of approaching issues in the political terrain, many have doubted the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie’s credibility as a virtuous practicing lawyer in Ghana.

But after he was humbled by the Supreme Court of the land on August 14, 2013, the President of the nine-panel judges hearing the 2012 election petition, Justice William Atuguba willingly disagreed with the hearsays about the freed Chief Scribe of the NPP as a dependable lawyer.

Lawyer Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie also known as ‘Sir John’ in politics was summoned by the Supreme Court for comments he made on a Madina-based private radio station, Oman FM, which the court believes was contemptuous.

Before Justice Atuguba would read out the mitigated sentence in an open court, he categorically stated that, his fellow Justices on the bench have all admitted that he (Sir John) “is a good lawyer”.

Nonetheless, Justice Atuguba admits the endorsement but insisted the NPP bigwig must put up a good behaviour for others to emulate.

“My colleagues on the bench said he is a good lawyer and I have no reason to doubt it….What can enter a lawyer of so many years standing to run down the Judiciary? This is serious,” he said.
