Ghana youth striker Ebenezer Assifuah is set to mark his official debut for FC Sion in the Swiss Schweizer Pokal as he has been named in their 18-man squad to face Sursee on Saturday.

Assifuah, 19, passed medicals on Thursday afternoon at the Sion training complex before completing a five-year move to the club from Liberty Professionals.

The 2013 FIFA U20 World Cup Golden Shoe Award winner then participated in his first training session and manager Michel Decastel was overly satisfied with his output and has included him in his 18-man squad to face Liga Classic side Sursee in a Cup game.

Assifuah’s extraordinary attacking gift won him praise in Turkey after he helped Ghana to finish third scoring six crucial goals for Sellas Tetteh’s side.

However there are considerable amount of skepticism about the success of the young attacker after African youngsters who shine at youth levels fail to meet expectations.

In 2009, striker Dominic Adiyiah – the Golden Shoe and Golden Ball Award winner, signed for European giants AC Milan but failed to make an official appearance for the Rossoneris.

Nigerian striker Chrisantus Macauley is also one of such players.

After showing immense promise in the 2007  FIFA U17 World Cup in South Korea and repeating a similar performance two years later in Egypt, the Nigerian’s precocity seems to have deserted him as he is now with UD Las Palmas in the Spanish Segunda División.

Striker Ransford Osei is also now with Ghana Premier League title-holders Asante Kotoko after joining them following disappointing spells abroad.

Assifuah has become the third Ghanaian player in the Swiss Super League after joining former Hearts of Oak hit-man Samuel Afum who plays for League leaders Young Boys Bern and Ishmael Yartey who is also at Sion.
