NPP holds countrywide vigils for summoned General Secretary, one other

Supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) across the country are holding various events today in solidarity with the party’s General Secretary who has been summoned to appear before the Supreme Court for making contemptuous statements.

Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie and party communications team member, Hopeson Adorye will on Wednesday face the panel of judges hearing the election petition to explain why they should not be jailed for contempt of court.

In the Ashanti region, party executives will later Tuesday hold a vigil but the police there say they haven’t been officially informed.

Police Public Relations Officer of the region ASP Mohamed Yusif Tanko however said they are prepared to offer protection for the vigil.

In the central region, a similar vigil has been planned for this evening while the women’s wing of the party has also issued a statement inviting all party supporters and market women to converge at the party’s headquarters in Accra wearing red and black attire.

Meanwhile the National Executives of the NPP say they are in full support of all the planned gatherings.
