I will be surprised if Sir John is jailed for contempt – Nana Akomea

Sir John

Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea is optimistic his General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie would escape the wrath of the Supreme Court which has summoned him for making contemptuous comments.

The NPP scribe, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie also known as Sir John and a communications team member, Hopeson Adorye have been summoned before the Supreme Court hearing the disputed 2012 presidential election over alleged contemptuous comments.

Their case would be heard on Wednesday August 14 after which the judges led by Justice William Atuguba will determine their fate.

Even before the two beleaguered NPP members appear before the nine judges, Nana Akomea is confident they would be pardoned by the court.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, the NPP Director of Communications said “I will be surprised if Sir John is jailed for contempt”.

According to him, given the timing of the invitation, the judges would be lenient on Sir John and just caution him.

The NPP man said the General Secretary did not speak in English therefore is more likely that what he [Sir John] is purported to have said was taken out of context.

He maintained that Sir John as an experienced lawyer will know to conduct himself in court.

Nana Akomea urged party members not to panic because this is not the first time the Court has summoned people before it for contempt.

He said Sir John is ever prepared to apologise to the Court if found guilty of the offense.

Nana Akomea prayed the Court to temper justice with mercy to preserve the peace in the already tensed political atmosphere in the country.
