Charges Against Sir John Can Have Implications For His Legal Practice

Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt, has opined that the offence committed by the General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie is more grievous than that of Hopeson Adorye.

He said lawyers are expected to have high standards and considering the fact that Mr Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, apart from being a General Secretary is also a lawyer, makes his situation worse.

Mr Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popular known as Sir John and Hopeson Adorye, a member of the Communication team of the NPP have been summoned to appear before the Supreme Court on Wednesday to answer contempt charges.

The duo are said to have made ‘contemptuous’ comments after the final touchline warning by William Atuguba, Presiding Judge in the on-going Presidential Election Petition at the Supreme Court.

Speaking to the issue, Kwesi Pratt was of the view that the contempt charge levelled against Sir John can have ‘professional implications for him’.

“We must understand that Sir John is not just a General Secretary but a lawyer and the court expects higher standards from lawyers. Sir John’s case, considering the fact that he is a lawyer is grievous than that of Hopeson Adorye. Sir John is aware of this and that was why he started saying he respects the Supreme Court and so on…” he told Kwami Sefa Kayi on ‘Kokrokoo’.
