Two ‘Galamsey’ Men Drown In Pra River

Two illegal miners (galamseyers) have been confirmed dead, while attempting to escape arrest by the task-force constituted to check illegal mining on the River Pra, in the Twifo District, last Friday.

They drowned in the river when they were trying to swim across it to escape the arrest.

Five others, however, managed to escape.

The incident followed a swoop on suspected criminals in the town, by the police.

There were some skirmishes between a mob from the town and the police, following the death of the two.

Some benches and documents at the Twifo Praso police station were destroyed.

A source at the police station said the attack was so serious that reinforcement was sought from the Central Regional Police Command which responded swiftly to protect lives and property.

When the police swooped on the suspected criminals in the town, the illegal miners, who were then carrying out their nefarious activities in the area, took to their heels and dived into the river.

The source said that calm was restored in the town after the number of police personnel was beefed up.

The bodies of the deceased were retrieved around eight o’clock in the morning, yesterday.
