Defender Jonathan Mensah’s regaining of his first team place at French side Evian is a big boost for Ghana ahead of next month’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Zambia.

The centre-back, who is by many as the most competent replacement for injured Isaac Vorsah, will get some match fitness before the titanic clash in Kumasi on 6 September.

The 22-year-old struggled for playing time at Evian last season because of injuries.

But having fully recovered from the fitness problems, Mensah was at his defensive best in the starting line-up as they held Sochaux to a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

Having played the entire duration of the game, it shows that he was impressive in pre-season which will have a positive trickle-down effect on his performance for the Black Stars when they host the Chipolopolo in the slaughter house of Kumasi.

Mensah was limited to only a few first team appearances for the Roses last season with injury playing a major part in his minimal game time.

But with fitness fully regained he will surely partner John Boye at the heart of the defence of the crucial game in 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
