Evian must cash in on their in-demand Ghana midfielder Rabiu Mohammed by transfering him before the end of the month because they can’t afford to improve his contract, insiders have told GHANAsoccernet.com.

Fulham, Benfica and Russian side Krasnodar are in a tussle to sign the midfielder but Evian want to offer the Ghanaian a two-year extension to his contract.

However, they are unable to afford the terms proposed by the agent of the player after his status improved in world football following his outing for Ghana at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 23-year-old is one of Evian’s most important players but are struggling to keep him at the club next season as stellar European clubs make enquiries about his availability.

Rabiu has also been linked with Marseille but insiders have informed Ghana’s number one football website, GHANAsoccernet.com, that Fulham and Benfica are the most serious contenders for his signature.

His current contract with Evian expires in June next year which means he can sign a pre-contract agreement with another club in January.

According to FIFA laws, a player can reach an agreement with another club with six months remaining on his expiring contract with his current club.

With the current transfer window set to close on 31 August in Europe, Evian must improve his contract or allow him to join one of the interested clubs before the end of the month.

If they are unable to sell the player in 20 days time, he can reach an agreement with another club when the transfer window reopens in January.

Officials of the two clubs from England and Portugal , Fulham and Benfica respectively have held discussions with Evian over the potential sale of the Ghanaian international.

The discussion is believed to have reached an advanced stage with Evian likely to decide on one of the two teams.

The ex-Liberty Professionals enforcer is valued at 3million Euros.
Mohammed shot to prominence this year as he has competed with some of the best players in the Ghana squad before sealing a permanent.

He has effortless slotted into Michael Essien’s position in the squad fending off competition from other formidable players like Anthony Annan, Derek Boateng and Emmanuel Agyemang Badu who are all highly regarded.

Mohammed played a key role in helping Evian to reach the French FA Cup final and during last season he was rated among the best midfielders in France.

Craven Cottage boss Martin Jol is looking to inject more youth into his squad and Rabiu, 23, fits the bill.

The Ghanaian has been capped eight times at senior level.
