Let’s pray for Supreme Court judges — Fredua Anto

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Fredrick Fredua Anto, has called on Ghanaians, irrespective of political or religious affiliation, to pray for the nine Supreme Court Judges to deliver a good judgement that will be acceptable to all.

He said this was an important national exercise since whatever judgement would be given by the court would determine the future political development of the nation.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic in Kumasi last Saturday, Mr Anto said looking at the kind of responsibility bestowed on the judges, the only thing Ghanians could do was to offer prayers for the judges to do a good job to save the nation from any turmoil.

The New Patriotic Party, led by its flag bearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, vice presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia,  and chairman of the party, Jake Okanka Obetsebi-Lamptey,  went to court after the Electoral Commission had declared President John Mahama the winner of the December 7-8, 2012 general election.

It took the nine-member panel of judges of the Supreme Court, chaired by Justice William Atuguba, 46 working days for the parties in the case to present their cases and cross-examine each other while the court  fixed today for the parties to submit their oral addresses.

The regional chairman was hopeful that since people all over the country listened to the proceedings of the court throughout the hearing, it would not be difficult for all to accept the verdict; saying it was now clear how things went during the election so all should remain calm and wait for the results to be announced.

He said the Ashanti Region, which is the opposition’s stronghold, was ready to accept the judgement of the Supreme Court since they had confidence in them.

Mr Anto cautioned the media to be circumspect when the verdict was given to avoid plunging the nation into chaos due to misreporting or commentary which could incite the public to riot or to any form of violence which could plunge the nation into conflict.
