Police Grab Three Notorious Robbers

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested three armed robbers in three separate incidents. The three – Sheariff Yussif, Gabriel Newman, and Nii Quaye Quatey- are said to have attacked, robbed and shot their victims and made away with their cash and other valuable items, running into millions of cedis.

Yussif was identified to be a member of a gang of robbers who allegedly attacked and robbed a businessman, Mallam Issaka Abudulia, on August 9, 2012.

Newman is alleged to have led a gang of robbers to carry out a robbery at the Ecobank branch at Accra Shopping Mall on July 21, 2011.

Quatey was recognised to have led a group of suspected robbers to attack a former Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament, Mr Albert Kan-Dapaah, at gunpoint at his Dansoman-Sahara residence last September and made away with GH¢1,500, $1,000, a laptop, jewellery and other valuable items. Briefing journalists in Accra on Sunday, the Accra Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohonu, said all the three suspects had been on police wanted list for the past two years.

He said Yussif was apprehended at his hide-out in Accra on July 18, 2013, after his elder brother, Nurudeen Yussif, reported him to the police for allegedly threatening to kill the family members.

Mr Yohonu said Quatey, who was a security guard claiming to work for an estate developing company in Accra, was also arrested at his hide-out.

For Newman, he said, after his accomplices were arrested, he left the country for Libya, adding, “he came back this year thinking that the dust has settled, but luck eluded him and he is now in the firm grip of the police”.

Mr Yohonu said Newman, who also led the same gang to rob the Ecobank, attacked the Tema branch of United Bank of Africa (UBA), which resulted in the death of a police officer.

He said in an attempt to conduct another robbery at Haatso in Accra, two of Newman’s accomplices, Baba Hasan and Sam Peters, lost their lives in a shoot-out with the police on February 24, 2012.

Mr Yohonu said the three suspects would be arraigned after the police had finished with their investigations.
