Sheriff Yussif, a notorious armed robber on police wanted list who has been on the run was arrested after his brother informed the Accra Regional Police of his return.

Information from the police indicated that he was arrested on Friday, July 19, 2013.

DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno told journalists at a press briefing where, seven robbers were lined up that at about 11:00pm on Thursday July 18, 2013, one Yussif Nurudeen, who identified himself as the elder brother of suspect Sheriff Yussif reported to the police about the arrival of his younger brother to their family house at Abehenease near Amasaman.

The younger brother of the suspect told the police that Sheriff Yussiff had threatened to kill him, hence the report.

Following the complaint, the Accra Police commander said officers from his command acted swiftly, leading to the arrest of the suspect.

After the arrest and interrogation, he said, on July 20, 2013, the Police, led by the complainant, Yussif Nurudeen in the company of the suspect, conducted a search in their family house.

The Police, according to DCOP Yohuno, retrieved two AK 47 assault rifles, one pump action gun, one short gun and 40 rounds of ammunition as well as 18 live cartridges from an uncompleted building in the house.

“Upon interrogation, the suspect claimed ownership of the weapons,” the police chief said.

In a related development the same suspect, Sheriff Yussif, is also being held for his involvement in a robbery where one Mallam Issaka Abudulai was attacked on August 9, 2012.

DCOP Yohuno said a Police patrol team from Amasaman had a distress call that day about a group of armed men who had attacked one Mallam Issaka Abudulai at Abehenease near Amasaman.

However, the robbers fled on seeing the police but they abandoned their vehicle at the crime scene and also left “their victim Mallam Issaka Abudulai to his fate,” the Accra regional commander said.

Mallam Issaka Abudulai, according to the police, assisted them by directing them to the route used by the robbers to escape.

“The police pursued them, and caught up with the robbers who were escaping on a motorbike,” DCOP Yohuno said adding that “sensing danger, the armed men started firing at the police.”

In defence, he stated, the police also returned fire, injuring suspect Sheariff Yussif and killing Kwasi Akator alias, Lion in the process.

Yet, Sheriff managed to escape arrest although he sustained gunshot wounds.
