Police Constable Run Over By Articulated Truck

A 28-year-old police constable, Agyei Perry, met his untimely death in the early hours of yesterday when an articulated truck ran over him at a barrier near the Oduom railway crossing in Kumasi.

The brakes of the truck, which was loaded with cement, was said to have failed on reaching the barrier and it subsequently ran over the policeman who recently passed out from training.

He was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) where he was pronounced dead.

His body has been deposited at the KATH morgue for autopsy.

Briefing the Daily Graphic in Kumasi, Chief Inspector Noble Dee, station officer of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Police Station, said the policeman had accompanied other personnel on a normal snap check on the Accra-Kumasi highway at a point at Oduom.

He said around 2 a.m. , when the articulated truck reached the checkpoint, the police signalled it to stop.

The driver did not stop and instead allegedly ran the truck over Perry.

The driver pulled up a few metres away from the accident spot, but he and his mate abandoned the vehicle and bolted.

Chief Inspector Dee said the other police personnel who were on duty with Perry took him to the KATH, where he was pronounced dead.

The police drove the truck to the KNUST police station, where frantic efforts are being made to arrest the driver and his mate.

Chief Inspector Dee, therefore, appealed to the general public to assist the police to track the driver and his mate to help the police in their investigations into the case.
