Court Jails Remand Prisoner For Possessing Drugs

An Accra Circuit Court on Thursday handed a three years prison term to Mustapha Awudu, a remand prisoner, for possessing narcotic drug without lawful authority, contrary to section 2 (1) of PNDCL 236/90.

The Court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri said the convict did not show remorse over the offence and deserved to be punished.

The facts of the case as presented by Police Chief Inspector Isaac Agbemehda were that, the convict, who is 23 years old is a prisoner standing trial in a robbery case before an Accra Circuit Court.

He said on July 26, at the Cocoa Affairs Court cells, a witness in the robbery case saw changes in the convicts walking style.

Chief Inspector Agbemehda said a search was therefore conducted on him and quantities of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis and 39 sticks of cigarette were found in his underwear.

He said the convict was arrested and upon questioning he admitted the offence.

The convict said the substance was meant for sale at the Nsawam Medium Prison.

The prosecution told the court that, the convict also mentioned his source as one Joe from Ashiaman, but failed to assist the police to arrest him.
