Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has shocked Kotoko’s 12-man board by sacking all of them and appointing the club’s ex-star Opoku Nti to run the club on temporary basis, GHANASoccernet.com can exclusively reveal.
His Majesty fired the 12-man board on Tuesday just 24 hours after they met to appoint Paul Adu-Gyamfi as interim Chief Executive in the wake of KK Sarpong’s resignation.
But in an apparent move to rubbish the move by the board, the Asantehene appointed the club’s former player and ex-international Opoku Nti as Interim Chief Executive after a meeting at the Manhyia Palace on Tuesday afternoon.
Nti will be supported by head coach Mas-Ud Dramani and the club’s accountant Charles Opoku to run the club in the short-term.
The decision by the 12-man board to meet on Monday without the blessing of the Asantehene looks not to have gone down well with the King who moved to stake his claim.
Asantehene had asked KK Sarpong had asked the board to meet him last week when they visited the team but they were not sensitive to the views of the King and went ahead to meet which led to the decision to fire all of them.
Nicknamed Zico, the retired forward etched his name into the history books after scoring the winning goal against Al Ahly of Egypt in the 1983 Africa Clubs Championship final played in Kumasi.
In that same year, he emerged runner-up in the France Football African Footballer of the Year award.
The disbanded board was headed by Dr KK Sarpong who unexpectedly resigned from the position last week.
