Lawal Abdul Ganiyu has cruised to a landslide victory in retaining his seat as the chairman of the Eastern Regional Football Association – handing a humiliating defeat to Nana Kwadwo Budu II in the process.
Lawal polled an impressive 147 votes with his main challenger; Nana Budu managing a paltry 17 votes out of the total valid votes cast in elections held in Koforidua on Saturday.
The retention of Lawal signals a massive endorsement of his stewardship as against Nana Budu who has attempted in several ways including going to the law courts to unseat the incumbent despite being profoundly unpopular within the Eastern Regional FA.
The elections was held on Saturday in accordance with a court directive towards settling a protracted dispute over the leadership of the regional football body.
Football in Eastern Region has stalled well over two years now due to several litigation initiated by Nana Budu.
The elections is now expected to put to bed all lingering issues and to un-pause the development and growth of football in the Eastern Region.
Lawal’s re-election also means he returns to occupy a seat on the powerful Executive Committee of the Ghana Football Association as one of the 10-elected regional chairmen.
He will be sworn in accordingly for a second-term in office.
