We Asked RLG For Sponsorship Not Financial Support- PAC

Parliament is to investigate allegations that the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) recently wrote a letter to RLG Telecommunications seeking financial support for its activities.

News of the alleged letter went viral on Wednesday, 26th June 2013, after The Herald Newspaper published a front page article, quoting Abdul Malik Kweku Baako Jnr as having claimed he had evidence to prove the PAC had sought financial support from RLG.

However, speaking on Citi Eyewitness News, former Member of Parliament for the Sege constituency and a former senior member of the PAC, Alfred Abayate, stated that the letter was to seek sponsorship and not financial assistance for the workings of the Committee.

“The letter didn’t say that RLG should give them money for their work here but rather, there is a conference happening in Gambia… the letter was written for sponsorship to assist the committee in going to this conference,” he stated.

According to Mr. Abayate, RLG, on their part had not done well and as such, the sponsorship letter was being withdrawn.

“For such a letter written to RLG, to find its way into the hands of Kweku Baako Malik, then to me, RLG has not done well. As I am talking now, we are withdrawing the letter but they are not willing to hand over the letter,” he stated.

Mr. Abayate further mentioned that it was not the first time companies had been asked to sponsor committees of parliament to go to conferences.

This is not the first time companies in Ghana have assisted committees of parliament to go to conferences… we are helping to build the public accounts system for Ghana and the whole of West Africa,” he noted.
