PURPOSE
Assist the Director, Ghana Tax in managing the Corporation’s Ghana Tax function by:
  1. Managing the timely and accurately preparation and ling of all Ghana corporate tax returns,
  2. Executing the timely and accurately applied and documented tax accounting principles required under ASC 740 and Ghana GAAP,
  3. Managing the research and execution of tax planning and structuring ideas,
  4. Managing local tax audits, appeals and litigation matters, including implementation of tax audit strategy to effectively manage risk, and
  5. Providing input as needed into the Company’s government relations strategies as it relates to taxes.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  1. Assist the Director, Ghana Tax in managing the Ghana tax accounting function to ensure timely and accurate application and documentation of tax accounting required under both ASC 740 and Ghana GAAP. Includes preparation of all monthly, quarterly and annual reporting. Also includes proactively engaging with the Corporate Tax Accounting team to ensure consistent application of assumptions used in quarterly tax accounting in addition to meeting all internal deadlines set by the Corporate Tax Accounting team. Assists the Finance department and the company’s external auditors on all Newmont Ghana tax-related financial reporting matters.
  2. Manage the information gathering and review all inputs for Ghana taxes disclosed in the Company’s Sustainability reporting.
  3. Take ownership of all Ghana tax forecasting activities including the preparation of quarterly cash tax forecasts and all tax inputs (current and deferred tax expense) submitted for Company forecasts and Business Plans. Proactively team with Ghana Business Planning function to understand assumptions and ensure reasonably accurate tax calculations in all Business Plans, taking into account current legislation a necessary. Proactively review and provide input to Business Planning team for any tax inputs in project models.
  4. Manage the timely and accurate filing of all corporate tax lodgings (income tax, non-income tax, direct and indirect tax), payments, documentation and reporting. Includes any new filing requirements that may arise (e.g. Transfer Pricing). Recommend reasonable assumptions for quarterly self-assessment payments (estimated payments).
  5. Responsible for all Ghana income tax compliance related information systems implementations, process designs, and software or portal applications to create and maintain efficiencies between tax accounting and tax compliance processes while minimizing provision to return true-ups.
  6. Maintain a current and detailed knowledge and understanding of tax legislation that impacts the company, including emerging issues. Advise Tax Management appropriately and on a timely basis regarding emerging tax issues and recommend actions for tax savings and tax mitigation opportunities.
  7. Manage research and implementation of tax planning to minimize the Company’s overall Ghanaian tax position, cash taxes, and effective tax rate. Continuously identify and research ideas of how the Company can legitimately minimize tax payments without infringing existing legislation. May include engaging and working with outside advisors to conduct brainstorming sessions.
  8. Coordinate GRA correspondence on tax audits and follow up to ensure early resolution of tax audit issues.
  9. Develop and maintain strong professional relationships with external parties including key members of the Ghana Revenue Authority, service providers, and industry peers.
  10. Work closely with other departments to provide proactive tax advice regarding impacts of business activities and transactions. Includes proactively building relationships with peers in Supply Chain, A/P, Finance, Business Planning, Legal and Government Relations.
  11. Comply with, educate and enforce staff compliance with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act for all payments made to governmental officials or representatives.
  12. Train, coach and develop direct reports to maintain comprehensive personnel skill sets.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The position is located in Accra, Ghana, with periodic travel to other locations.
Qualification and Requirement
  1. Degree in accounting, taxation or commerce. Masters in Taxation is a plus.
  2. Minimum 10 years post graduate experience, and work as a senior officer with the Ghana Revenue Authority or work within the tax section of a “Big 4” chartered accounting firm in a tax compliance or tax accounting role for a minimum of 4 years. Mining or natural resources experience is an advantage.
  3. Chartered Accountant (CA) or equivalent.
  4. Demonstrated skills in USGAAP tax accounting in accordance with ASC 740.
  5. Strong technical knowledge of the Internal Revenue Act (ACT 592); VAT Act (ACT 546) and amendments thereof.
  6. Microsoft Office products experience is desirable
  7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  8. High level of motivation, requiring minimal direction/supervision
  9. Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate a team is a plus
