Ghana U20 striker Richmond Boakye-Yiadom has paid glowing tribute to their triumphant predecessors of 2009 at the FIFA U20 World Cup.

Andre Ayew skippered the side which beat Brazil 4-3 on penalties after drawing 0-0 after extra time to become the first African country to win the tournament.

There is pressure on this year’s select band of players to replicate that feat in Turkey but it is turning out to be a washed-out campaign.

But Boakye says the current crop of players have been motivated by that historic feat.

”They’re our inspiration. We have huge respect for what they achieved. Their triumph was historic, and we’ve basically come here to repeat it,” the Juventus player told FIFA.com

Ghana are facing early elimination from the competition after suffering two defeats against France and Spain in Group A.

The Black Satellites must now beat USA in Kayseri and wait for the other final Group matches to see if they can advance as one of the four third-place best finishers.

”It’s not too late yet and we still believe in ourselves. As soon as we’re out there against the USA, we have to forget everything going on around us,” he added.

“We have to focus our minds and work hard as a unit. And if we manage that, we’ll win the game.”
