Institutions That Reject National ID Cards Will Be Sanctioned

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has issued a stern warning to all institutions rejecting the Ghana card as a proof of identification of citizens and non-citizens in the country to desist from doing so.

The warning follows reports that most institutions which are expected to use the details on the card for transactions reject it.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the authority, Bertha Dzeble “it is unlawful to reject the card because that is a document of the republic of Ghana.”

Speaking to Citi News, Mad. Bertha Dzeble disclosed that there is a penalty for that offense.

“One penalty unit is 12 cedis or can also attract a term of imprisonment so we have put all of that in a publication” she said.

According to her, this would help the public to know the offense as well as the punishment that goes with it.

She added that the perpetrators would be sent to court for the necessary penalties to be meted out.
