Midfielder Andre Ayew says skippering Ghana to win the 2009 FIFA U20 World Cup finals remains the greatest moment of his career.

Then on loan from Marseille at second-tier Arles-Avignon, the son of Ghana legend Abedi Pele, scored two goals and provided three assists on their march to final against Brazil.

The Black Satellites triumphed 4-3 on penalties after both sides finished 120 minutes of action 0-0 to become the first African country to win the competition and break Europe and South America’s duopoly.

“It’s a wonderful feeling to have gone down in history as the first African team to win the competition,” Ayew told FIFA.com

“What’s more, we won against Brazil, when everyone thought we’d lost before the match had even started. For me personally, as the captain, to be the first African to lift the cup made me happy and proud.”

Ayew has gone on to play in the final of the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations where the Black Stars lost to Egypt in Angola.

He was also an influential member of the Ghana squad which reached the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup finals.

The 23-year-old has also winning both the French League Cup and Trophees des Champions twice.
