Engineers of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly have been instructed to support victims of the Central Market fire in rebuilding temporary structures at the scene.
The Kumasi Mayor, Kojo Bonsu announced this Tuesday when he visited the market to have first hand information after the fire outbreak.
The mayor expressed grave sympathies for the victims who lost millions of cedis when fire gutted the market on Sunday. The assembly, following a demonstration by the market women after the fire outbreak, agreed to allow them construct temporary structures so they can restart their trade.
Mr Bonsu also consoled the hundreds of victims who were busy re-constructing their raked structures.
He assured them that government will do “everything possible to reduce their plight”. “We are stakeholders in building the city and therefore we will not look on as you lament after this fire disaster. We will endeavor to go the extra expensive mile of ensuring that you are re-settled,” he assured.
“Already, the KMA has donated Ghc200,0000 to you and more will be done to lessen your predicament”. Mr Bonsu added.
The mayor, looking visibly shattered at the sight of the affected traders desperately trying to reconstruct their burnt structures, added that President John Mahama is also disbursed about the disaster and will do everything to ameliorate their pain.
As part of preventing such fires in the future, Mr Bonsu stated that the market will be closed to businesses at 6pm each day in accord with the city’s by-laws.
The traders, most of whom were women, expressed appreciation for the mayor’s timeous intervention.
