Embattled founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobbey (Tarzan) has said that, had it not been an early intervention of the Greater Accra Regional commander and commander of Nima Police, DSP Francis Ayesu, livid NPP supporters would have lynched him during and after his meeting with the disciplinary committee last Friday.
According to Tarzan, tension arose when supporters heard of his arrival at the party’s headquarters with intentions to beat him up.
“Whiles the meeting was ongoing, people wanted to break all three doors leading to the meeting room. How can people get access to the inside room of the party’s headquarters and want to break doors down and enter forcefully? he questioned.
Dr. Wereko-Brobbey’s statement expressed reservations about an interview Perry Okudzeto granted some radio stations while the meeting with the committee was in progress.
He said some leading members of the party had to call police enforcement to calm down the thugs who were willing to attack him.
“Situation at the headquarters was worse so Mr. Ayikwei Otoo called the regional police commander. And when the police arrived, those at the entrance of the headquarters told them (police) the place is calm with no violence so they should return to the station. It got to a point where the leaders having the meeting with me had to put the meeting on hold to calm down the hoodlums. We stopped the meeting because of them.
“…for the third time the leaders had to call the police again to come and they came in their two pick-up patrol cars containing 17 policemen, yet the crowd prevented them from entering until the Nima commander arrived at the scene,” he said.
Speaking on Accra-based Asempa FM, the former Ghana @50 boss said, to cover up the ignominy because some section of the media were around, the party gurus pleaded with the police to handle the issue themselves so as it will not be exaggerated by the media.
“They (NPP party leaders) agreed with the police so the issue will not be ballyhoo in the media since the TV3 crew was around. I had to give my bag to someone for safety. Their system was to make sure no camera capture me been escorted by the police, but they (police) took me home from danger”.
Meanwhile, before leaving the premises of the office, Dr. Wereko-Brobbey threatened he will have sued the leadership of the party if the thugs had carried out their intention to harm him since they had assured him of his safety.
He subsequently issued a statement accusing Perry Okudzeto and his cohorts for masterminding the attack on him.
