A 25-year old businessman is being held in police custody for allegedly murdering a driver at East Legon in Accra.
Yahaya Ibrahim, who also allegedly harmed a driver, is in addition facing a charge of causing harm.
Ibrahim, who resides at East Legon, was arrested by the Accra regional police when he reported himself to the police in the company of his father, that he had shot a man who attacked him unprovoked.
Accra Regional Police Command Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent Emmanuel Frank Adufati told DAILY GUIDE that on June 4, 2013, Ibrahim, carrying a licensed pump action gun with number T733380 and four “AA” live cartridges, reported to the regional Criminal Investigation Department that he was attacked without provocation by two unidentified men in the car park of the A and C Shopping Mall at East Legon, a suburb of Accra.
According to the police, Ibrahim said one of the two men rushed on him with a bottle in hand to stab him.
For fear of his life, he told the Police that he fired a warning shot “but the attacker disregarded the gunshot and was still rushing on him and so sensing danger he shot the attacker.”
The incident happened at about 1am and according to the report of the man at the centre of the case, he managed to flee from the scene after shooting his attacker.
Ibrahim then informed his father about the incident and was advised to report to the police.
“So his father accompanied him here to the Accra Regional Police Command to report the case and he was subsequently arrested,” said C/Supt Adufati
The regional Crime Officer said the Legon Police patrol team received a distress call about a shooting incident at the A and C Shopping Mall at East Legon and upon arrival found the deceased, in a pool of blood and another injured man.
The deceased, Yussif Agally, aged 29, is a driver to the injured man, Mahama Abudu whose whereabouts is presently not known.
While Mahama Abudu sustained injuries on the head and was rushed to the University Hospital, Legon, where he was admitted with a medical form for treatment, the body of the deceased with gunshot wound in the chest was deposited at the Police Hospital for autopsy.
On June 5, 2013 when the Police visited the Legon Hospital, Dr. Christian K. Amenuveve, the Director of the Hospital, confirmed that Mahama Abudu was admitted the previous day for treatment with Police Medical form and after treatment was discharged at about 5pm on the same day.
Dr Amenuveve said Abudu was expected to report on June 5, 2013 when the medical form would have been filled and signed by the medical doctor but failed to turn up.
According to C/Supt Adufati enquiries were extended to the scene of the incident at A & C Shopping Mall, where the security man, who witnessed the incident confirmed that two men attacked another man at about 1am on that day and one of them was shot dead while the other one who sustained injuries was rushed to Legon Hospital.
The crime officer said efforts were underway to fish out the whereabouts of Mahama Abudu to assist in investigation.
“We need him to throw more light on the case because the deceased died”
Yesterday, Yahaya Ibrahim was put before Adjabeng magistrate Court in Accra and was remanded in police custody after his pleas were not taken.
The case will be heard again by the court on Thursday June 11.
