President John Mahama would today inaugurate an Inter-Ministerial Taskforce on Illegal Mining at the Flagstaff House.

The taskforce is expected to look at the issue of galamsey activities in the country and find a way of managing illegal mining which has claimed numerous lives in the country.

Earlier at the Flagstaff House, President Mahama held a meeting with the Governor General of Canada David Johnston.

They discussed Canada’s interest in strengthening its commercial and education ties with Ghana, Joy News’ presidential affairs correspondent Seth Kwame Boateng reports.

President Mahama said although Ghana’s economy has been growing, it has not been able to translate that into job creation. He said the country is therefore looking forward to partner some universities in Canada to help the country in that direction.

He said the country would also tap into the experience of Canada in the energy sector.

On his part, Governor General of Canada David Johnston was happy about his visit to the country and promised to help strengthen the relationship between the two nations.

He lauded the peaceful atmosphere in the country, noting that Ghana has been able to create an enabling environment for business, and was sure Canadian investors would be delighted to invest in the country.

The Governor General will visit Kumasi to see at first hand the impact of the Canadian international development agency’s involvement in an agric research project on maize at the Crops Research Institute.

Mr. Johnston is on a four day visit to the country before he continues to Botswana and South Africa.
